The Life of a Pro Horse Racing Punter

There are no hard and fast qualifications to be a professional gambler in Horse Racing. There is no University degree or Masters degree to show people and the sad fact of the matter is that many people will look down at what you do for a living. This is the reality for anyone who gambles for a living. Whether it is poker or some other form of gambling, there will be nothing to show people your skill and knowledge except one thing……your results! But even then many people will not believe you unless you have a glamorous lifestyle and they may not believe you even then.

Because through the eyes of many, you simply cannot beat the bookies or your cannot buck the house odds. This all presumes that you play by their terms and rules and many people fail to take this on board. So the fact of the matter is that with certain people then no matter what you do, you will never get recognition for what you do. These people have a certain view of gambling and everything connected with it and nothing will ever change that.

So it really doesn’t matter what you say or do, your line of work will be looked on with disdain by many people who are close to you including family members. So you will need to be able to handle that in some capacity and having a “thick skin” is all part and parcel of the game. You will also need to be able to accept losses both mentally and psychologically and this also does not sit well with many people.

Many punters know that losses are unavoidable but yet cannot accept them psychologically. This leaves them in a situation where they will forever struggle to make it as professional or even semi-professional punters. The lifestyle is one of constant work and study which is often not rewarded at the end of any one individual day, week or month. This is a huge problem for many and especially those who have only ever worked in jobs where their income was derived in a linear fashion by being salaried.

This is why most punters who gamble for a living end up doing so in stages and not in one big jump. The best way to do this and if you have the confidence to do this and you have a solid strategy is to bet and punt on a part time basis first to see if you are successful. But even then I would still be tempted to try and merge your “career” with some other form of work so that your income was coming from numerous different sources.

But when you gamble for a living in horse racing, most of the frustrations and experiences that losing punters go through will be experienced by you on a day to day basis. Both types will make mistakes and experience losing for long periods. Both types will experience frustration and gloom and the only difference is that the winning punter experiences winning more than what they do losing in the long term.
